If we backtrack 8 years ago, I had moved out of the corporate world, completely overworked, deflated and lacking of passion. Decided to travel to India, as you do … to “find myself”. I absolutely loved the chaos, the energy and the ‘just get on and do it’ attitude of the people. As they don’t have a welfare system, everyone had a job, one way or another. Even if it meant selling pens outside one of the many tourist stops. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. No feeling sorry for yourself, no sitting on your butt moaning about the government. It made me realise how lucky we have it here in our little piece of paradise.
I returned home feeling invigorated and wanting more. So I flew to the US, a good friend was joining me a week later. While there, I decided to get myself into shape. I was a fat vegetarian. Not majorly overweight, just more fat and very little muscle tone. JELLY BELLY central! My mate and I hooked ourselves up an awesome personal trainer and hit the gym three to four times a week. 30 minute weight sessions, 20 min cardio at that. My muscles ached. I loved it. Our trainer introduced us to a bodybuilding diet. High protein, low carb, no crap. Yikes, I had to start eating chicken and fish again. Fruit wasn’t even in our diet, unless it was a small banana straight after our workout. And scrambled egg whites for breakfast every day, with one piece of wholemeal toast. You should’ve heard me, what the heck is this?? I bitched and moaned for at least a month while on this new eating planWhat!? He wants me to eat 5 x a day!? I felt like I was being tortured. . I ate it though, exactly as told. One thing I am is a good student. I saw amazing changes to my body literally overnight. I was burning fat, and building muscle tone right before my very eyes. It was amazing. Right then I knew, food is fuel. That’s all there is to it. Weight bearing exercises are key to achieving a sculpted body, but wow, what the right foods can do, was mindblowing. I couldn’t stop checking myself out, seriously! I immediately knew what I wanted to become. A personal trainer! A kickass one, just like my PT. So I headed to Dallas, Texas and enrolled in the famed Cooper Institute’s Physical Fitness Specialist course. I was the only international student, and many of the students had never heard of New Zealand. Go figure.
When I returned home I got straight into personal training. I loved it. I looked into the supplement ranges we had in NZ at the time and apart from EAS there wasn’t much. So set up a business and signed up to become NZ’s distributor for well known sports supplements from the US.
The supplement industry here was just starting to build, so it was a hard slog to start with, but what I noticed was so many people looking for the quick fix, the special pill which would miraculously make them thin, or muscly, or both. After seeing hundreds of kiwis spend thousands of dollars on products that honestly don’t work if you’re not eating right and working out, I started researching. What is the best way to burn fat and build muscle? What food works the best?
Then it dawned on me. I was cracking and separating a tray of eggs a day to get the right amount of protein I needed from egg whites. It was messy, boring and in the end, all I could do was scramble the egg whites. I have no patience. So doing all this preparation was getting to me.
That is how Eggcel was born. Out of my frustration and because I wanted kiwis to be able to eat clean easily. To build muscle and to burn fat naturally. No chemicals, no lab created products. Just what mother nature has to offer us. Pasteurisation allowed me to offer Eggcel as a fantastic alternative to the chalky tasting protein shakes that NZ was being inundated with. Eureka! I felt like a mad scientist (without the white coat or the chemicals!)
Now, all I want is to share with those who are finding it hard to lose the weight, who don’t want to resort to dieting or chugging down protein powders and bars day after day, but just want to be able to burn the fat naturally.
